CBT
Price: £165
CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training and is a training programme to allows you to ride a learner's bike.
This government-run safety course is provided by approved training bodies such as Bike Sense. It must be taken by any rider who wants to use a moped or 125cc bike on “L” Plates.
It is a set course of instruction and assessment that takes the learner from the beginning through to essential skills to keep you safe on the road.
All candidates are advised to wear jeans and sensible footwear. Gloves, helmets, and jackets are provided.
On arrival, you will be met by your instructors and given a chance to settle in with a cup of tea or coffee. Then the course will begin, going through the five elements of CBT including a road ride at the end. The training normally can be completed in 6 hours, but occasionally some people take longer, e.g. to gain more road experience and machine control, especially on a geared bike:
Element A (30 to 40 min.)
Introduction to CBT: Aims and objectives of the course
Element B (45 min. approx.)
Practical on-site training: Motorcycle controls and basic safety checks
Element C (2 to 3 h approx.)
Practical on-site riding: Basic skills to ride a motorcycle under control
Element D (50 to 60 min approx.)
Practical on-road training: Road Ride preparation
Element E (minimum 2 hours)
Practical on-road riding
All elements need to be taught in turn as it's important to master one skill before the next. CBTs start at 9:00 AM and will take until late afternoon to complete.
When you have successfully learnt all the required skills you will be issued with a DL196 (pass certificate). This is valid for two years and allows you to ride a moped or learner motorcycle on the road, unaccompanied. You must display “L” plates, and you cannot take a passenger or use motorways.
- Age 16 Ride a 50cc moped (geared or automatic)
- Age 17+ Ride a 125cc learner bike (geared or automatic)
The CBT is one of the first legal steps, and must by law be taken by any new rider before they get on the road using “L” plates. Don’t worry if you have never ridden before, as the course is aimed at novices with no experience at all. However, for complete beginners who want to familiarize themselves with clutch and gears before taking the CBT, we recommend our pre-CBT course (Try-a-bike session). Our instructors will take you through all the elements, so you safely learn whilst feeling confident and happy.
If the CBT cannot be completed on the day, a return visit will be required (£40 per hour).
For all candidates young or old, who do not drive cars, it is recommended to study the Highway Code before attending.
